Sensory Sensitive Trick or Treating at Spirit Ride

FRIDAY THE 13th AT SPIRIT RIDE!

Halloween can be an overwhelming activity for the population we serve. Knocking on a stranger’s door, interacting with a person in a mask or costume, and going from house to house in the dark may trigger some uncomfortable feelings.  Spirit Ride will be offering the opportunity to enjoy this holiday in a safe and caring environment with adults and other families who understand.  It is also a good way to practice for the 31st if choosing to go out that night.

Here are some tips that may help you with a child you know, or even to think about as you prepare for passing out treats:
  • Don’t wear a mask – children need to see a safe and friendly face
  • If a child hesitates saying “Trick or Treat” don’t demand that they say it. They are probably trying their best!
  • Ask them to open their bag and then put the candy in for them rather than have them reach into your bag or treats.
  • With a pre-verbal child, utilize Trick or Treat cards that say something like, “Trick or Treat – I’m working hard on saying that but I’m not quite there yet. Thank you for understanding and Happy Halloween!”
 See you on the TRAIL!
